1. Leadership and Management for All Doctors

In February 2012 the GMC issued guidance on Leadership and management for all doctors with the aim of helping doctors understand their responsibilities in relation to employment issues; teaching and training; as well as planning, using and managing resources.  Further information is available to download on the right hand side of this page.

2. The Medical Leadership Competency Framework

The Medical Leadership Competency Framework (MLCF) was jointly developed by The Academy of Medical Royal Colleges and the NHS Institute for Innovation and Improvement in conjunction with a wide range of stakeholders.  The MLCF describes the leadership competences doctors need in order to become effective professionals and more actively involved in the planning, delivery and transformation of health services.  It has been incorporated as it stands into some curricula and is the basis of the leadership curriculum in others. As a framework it is useful to highlight individual strengths and development areas through self assessment and structured feedback from colleagues A copy of the MLCF is available to download on the right hand side of this page.

3. LEADER Tool

Effective clinical leadership is essential for good patient care and leadership is now part of the curriculum for foundation as well as all core and higher specialty training. In response to this, STFS is piloting the addition of a formative, specific leadership skills assessment form to the foundation ePortfolio. This form - LEADER – Clinical Leadership for Work-based Assessment - can be downloaded from here. STFS are currently in talks with the providers of Horus to have this integrated as it was in the NES ePortfolio.

Please see below guidance for foundation doctors and for educational supervisors on completing this assessment which includes suggestions of leadership activities which foundation doctors could undertake.

A video of the LEADER tool in practice is available below.  The video is an example of an educational supervisor using the LEADER tool to explore leadership with his F2 doctor.

5. F2/Graduate Management Trainee Pairing Scheme

F2/Graduate Management Trainee Pairing Scheme
Over the last few years, Both HE KSS and HE South London have run a project which enabled management trainees in their first year of training in the NHS to pair up with year 2 Foundation doctors, and to undertake a joint project together. This scheme was successful in promoting collaborative working and the development of leadership skills.

In October 2014, the responsibility for organising multi-professional pairing schemes passed to the individual hospital trusts some of whom now have arrangements in place to support the new scheme which is called PATH.

If you are interested in carrying out a project with people from other professions please contact the local Leadership tutor who may be able to help. Local foundation programme administrators can provide contact details for leadership tutors.

Details of scheme and application process – 2013/14

HE KSS – see document 5a for details of the scheme.  Applications should be submitted between 19 August and 2 September – see document 5b.

HE South London – details awaited
